Matsuo Bashō Begins Haiku Mastery
Poet involved
What happened
Around 1672, Matsuo Bashō began transforming haikai no renga (comic linked verse) into serious literary art, developing what would become known as haiku. His innovative approach emphasized seasonal reference (kigo), cutting word (kireji), and profound simplicity, elevating a popular form into high poetry that captured fleeting moments of natural beauty and spiritual insight.
Literary impact
Bashō's haiku revolutionized Japanese poetry by demonstrating how extreme brevity could achieve maximum expressive power. His aesthetic of sabi (lonely beauty) and karumi (lightness) influenced all subsequent Japanese verse and, after translation, profoundly impacted modernist Western poetry including Imagism. His travel journals blending prose and verse created hybrid literary forms.
