In 1621, the Dutch Republic founded the Dutch West India Company to trade, colonise and wage war in the Atlantic. It operated in West Africa, the Americas and the Caribbean. The company became deeply involved in sugar, slavery, privateering and colonial settlement.

Dutch Atlantic expansion widened the geography of travel writing, maps, merchant narratives and colonial propaganda. The same networks later shaped stories of exile, encounter and commerce that entered European poetry and prose.
