Mumtaz Mahal, beloved wife of Mughal emperor Shah Jahan, died in 1631 after childbirth. Her death led Shah Jahan to commission the Taj Mahal as a mausoleum. The monument became one of the most celebrated architectural expressions of grief, power and imperial refinement.

The Taj Mahal entered global imagination as an emblem of love, mourning and artistic splendour. Persianate courtly aesthetics, garden symbolism and elegiac feeling around the monument later inspired poets in South Asia and beyond.
