Spinoza publishes the Theological-Political Treatise

What happened

In 1670, Spinoza anonymously published his Theological-Political Treatise. The work argued for freedom of thought, historical reading of scripture and limits on religious authority. It was quickly condemned as dangerous and radical.

Literary impact

Spinoza's biblical criticism changed the intellectual conditions for religious poetry and sacred narrative. Later writers found in him a path towards naturalistic spirituality, political tolerance and daring reinterpretation of inherited texts.
