1681

Event dated 4 March 1681

Pennsylvania is founded as a Quaker colony

What happened

In 1681, Charles II granted William Penn a charter for Pennsylvania. Penn imagined the colony as a refuge for Quakers and a model of religious toleration. The settlement developed around planned urbanism, treaty-making and pluralism.

Literary impact

Pennsylvania fostered Quaker journals, reform prose and later abolitionist writing. Its ideals of plain speech and conscience fed a literary culture suspicious of ornament but rich in moral urgency.
