La Salle claims Louisiana for France
What happened
In 1682, René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle, reached the mouth of the Mississippi River. He claimed the vast Mississippi basin for France and named it Louisiana in honour of Louis XIV. The claim reshaped French imperial ambition in North America.
Literary impact
La Salle's journey contributed to exploration narratives that imagined rivers as imperial pathways. Later literature of Louisiana, the Mississippi and the frontier drew on this mixture of French ambition, Indigenous worlds and geographic wonder.
