Johann Sebastian Bach dies

What happened

Johann Sebastian Bach died in Leipzig in 1750. His death is often used as a symbolic boundary between the Baroque period and later musical styles. Much of his reputation grew after later rediscovery and performance.

Literary impact

Bach's sacred and contrapuntal art illuminates the musical world in which hymn, chorale and biblical poetry flourished. Later poets found in Bach a model of spiritual architecture, disciplined feeling and formal depth.
