Operation Rolling Thunder begins sustained air war over Vietnam

What happened

Operation Rolling Thunder began in 1965 as a sustained United States bombing campaign against North Vietnam. Fixed-wing aircraft from bases and carriers carried out thousands of sorties. The campaign made air power central to the experience and controversy of the Vietnam War.

Literary impact

Vietnam War poetry and protest songs repeatedly confront helicopters and aircraft as sounds of fear, power, and moral distance. Rolling Thunder gave anti-war writers a stark example of technological force failing to resolve human and political complexity.
