Closes

A note from Richard

V2Melody will close at midnight on 20 January 2028

This site has been a retirement project in musical poetry: poems chosen with care and set to music, offered freely for as long as it felt right to keep the garden open.

The work no longer holds the place it once did in my life. I have gone as far with it as I wish to go. Like a sand mandala, it was made to be completed and then released. I am not attached to its permanence, and I do not believe any of it needs to last beyond the time it was given. The poems were already here before I arrived and began to experiment with them. They will still be here when these musical experiments, and indeed myself, have been swept away, like the sand of a mandala. Nothing has been lost.

I want a simpler end to my life, days of simple love and enjoyment with my wonderful wife of 20 years. The work of maintaining a server, the monitoring, and the residual obligations that come with keeping a site alive no longer fit that life.

From 4 November 2026 I will not be adding new poems or musical poems to the site.

Until midnight on 20 January 2028, Spanish time, everything remains available exactly as it is. That is when my VPS server contract comes to an end, and it will not be renewed. After that, the server will be switched off and the site will disappear.

The Mandala Is Finished explains this more fully.

Thank you to anyone who found a poem, a track, or a quiet moment here.

The pleasure was in the making.

Richard

    Death of John Calvin

John Calvin, a central figure in the Protestant Reformation, died in Geneva in 1564 after two decades of influential work in shaping Reformed theology and church governance. His teachings emphasized predestination and the sovereignty of God, which became foundational to Reformed churches across Europe and the Atlantic world. Calvin's legacy continues to impact Christian thought and practice, particularly within Presbyterian and Reformed traditions, making him one of the most significant theologians in Western history.

  • 27 May 1703

Peter the Great Founds St. Petersburg

Tsar Peter the Great founded St. Petersburg in 1703 on marshland at the Neva River's mouth, creating a 'window to Europe' that symbolized Russia's westernization ambitions. Built by conscripted laborers under brutal conditions, the city became Russia's capital in 1712 and a showcase for European-style architecture, culture, and administration. Peter's reforms aimed to modernize Russia by importing Western technology, customs, and institutional models.

    Myall Creek Massacre in Australia

In 1838, the Myall Creek Massacre occurred when stockmen killed at least 28 Wirrayaraay people, primarily women and children, at Myall Creek Station in New South Wales, Australia. This event is significant as it led to the only convictions for such frontier killings in Australian history, highlighting the violent impact of colonization on Indigenous populations. The massacre sparked debates about justice and the treatment of Aboriginal peoples in Australia.

  • 27 May 1962

    Centralia Mine Fire

The Centralia Mine Fire, which began in 1962 in Centralia, Pennsylvania, has led to the gradual abandonment of the town due to the ongoing underground fire. The fire, caused by improper waste disposal, has burned for decades, resulting in dangerous subsidence and toxic gas emissions. This incident serves as a cautionary tale about the environmental consequences of mining practices and the long-term impacts on communities.
