Closes

A note from Richard

V2Melody will close at midnight on 20 January 2028

This site has been a retirement project in musical poetry: poems chosen with care and set to music, offered freely for as long as it felt right to keep the garden open.

The work no longer holds the place it once did in my life. I have gone as far with it as I wish to go. Like a sand mandala, it was made to be completed and then released. I am not attached to its permanence, and I do not believe any of it needs to last beyond the time it was given. The poems were already here before I arrived and began to experiment with them. They will still be here when these musical experiments, and indeed myself, have been swept away, like the sand of a mandala. Nothing has been lost.

I want a simpler end to my life, days of simple love and enjoyment with my wonderful wife of 20 years. The work of maintaining a server, the monitoring, and the residual obligations that come with keeping a site alive no longer fit that life.

From 4 November 2026 I will not be adding new poems or musical poems to the site.

Until midnight on 20 January 2028, Spanish time, everything remains available exactly as it is. That is when my VPS server contract comes to an end, and it will not be renewed. After that, the server will be switched off and the site will disappear.

The Mandala Is Finished explains this more fully.

Thank you to anyone who found a poem, a track, or a quiet moment here.

The pleasure was in the making.

Richard

  • 3 October 1965

Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965

On October 3, 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Immigration and Nationality Act, also known as the Hart-Celler Act. The law abolished the national-origin quotas that had favored European immigrants since the 1920s, replacing them with a system that prioritized family reunification and skilled labor. The act was a landmark of the civil rights era, ending an era of race-based immigration policy and opening the doors to mass immigration from Asia, Latin America, and Africa. This legislation fundamentally changed the ethnic composition of the United States.

  • 3 October 1691

Treaty of Limerick and the Flight of the Wild Geese

On October 3, 1691, the Treaty of Limerick was signed, ending the Williamite war in Ireland between the Jacobites and the forces of William of Orange. The treaty allowed the Jacobite army to withdraw to France, leading to the 'Flight of the Wild Geese,' where some 14,000 Irish soldiers left to serve in continental European armies. The treaty's terms, guaranteeing religious toleration and land rights for Catholics, were soon broken by the Protestant Ascendancy.

  • 3 October 1815

Chassigny Martian Meteorite Falls in France

On October 3, 1815, a meteorite fell in the village of Chassigny, Haute-Marne, France. The Chassigny meteorite is a rare olivine-rich achondrite and is one of only a handful of Martian meteorites known to exist. Its fall was witnessed by local residents, and the fragments were collected and studied by scientists. The meteorite's composition provided early evidence of volcanic activity on Mars and has since been used to understand the planet's geological history. It remains a key specimen in planetary science and meteoritics.
