Closes

A note from Richard

V2Melody will close at midnight on 20 January 2028

This site has been a retirement project in musical poetry: poems chosen with care and set to music, offered freely for as long as it felt right to keep the garden open.

The work no longer holds the place it once did in my life. I have gone as far with it as I wish to go. Like a sand mandala, it was made to be completed and then released. I am not attached to its permanence, and I do not believe any of it needs to last beyond the time it was given. The poems were already here before I arrived and began to experiment with them. They will still be here when these musical experiments, and indeed myself, have been swept away, like the sand of a mandala. Nothing has been lost.

I want a simpler end to my life, days of simple love and enjoyment with my wonderful wife of 20 years. The work of maintaining a server, the monitoring, and the residual obligations that come with keeping a site alive no longer fit that life.

From 4 November 2026 I will not be adding new poems or musical poems to the site.

Until midnight on 20 January 2028, Spanish time, everything remains available exactly as it is. That is when my VPS server contract comes to an end, and it will not be renewed. After that, the server will be switched off and the site will disappear.

The Mandala Is Finished explains this more fully.

Thank you to anyone who found a poem, a track, or a quiet moment here.

The pleasure was in the making.

Richard

  • 9 November 1989

    Berlin Wall Falls

The Berlin Wall fell on November 9, 1989, when East German authorities unexpectedly opened border crossings following weeks of protests and reform pressures across Eastern Europe. The wall's demolition symbolized communism's collapse in Eastern Europe and enabled German reunification completed in 1990. This event marked the effective end of the Cold War's division of Europe, triggering democratic transitions across former Soviet bloc countries.

  • 9 November 1888

Jack the Ripper Murders Expose Limits of Victorian Evidence Gathering

Between August and November 1888, at least five women were murdered in the Whitechapel district of London's East End, in crimes attributed to an unidentified killer known as Jack the Ripper. Scotland Yard's Metropolitan Police and City of London Police pursued extensive but ultimately unsuccessful investigations, gathering physical evidence, witness testimony, and correspondence purportedly from the killer. The murders exposed critical limitations in Victorian criminal investigation — no systematic fingerprinting, no forensic laboratory — and galvanised calls for investigative reform.

  • 9 November 1938

    Kristallnacht Pogrom

The Kristallnacht pogrom, which occurred on November 9-10, 1938, involved coordinated attacks on Jews and synagogues across Germany. This violent event marked a significant escalation in the Nazi regime's anti-Semitic policies and foreshadowed the horrors of the Holocaust. Kristallnacht served as a wake-up call to the international community regarding the severity of Nazi persecution and highlighted the urgent need for action against rising fascism.

  • 9 November 2011

    Western Black Rhinoceros Declared Extinct

In 2011, the Western Black Rhinoceros was declared extinct due to poaching and habitat loss in West Africa. This tragic event underscored the urgent need for wildlife conservation efforts and raised awareness about the threats facing endangered species. The extinction of this subspecies serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of human activity on biodiversity.

  • 9 November 1872

Great Boston Fire Exposes Inadequacy of Urban Fire Insurance

The Great Boston Fire of November 1872 destroyed sixty-five acres of the city centre, generating $73 million in property losses and revealing that many insurers had dangerously underestimated urban risk concentrations and loss accumulations.

  • 9 November 1918

    Abdication of Kaiser Wilhelm II

On 9 November 1918, Kaiser Wilhelm II signed his abdication at Spa in Belgium as revolution spread through Germany, ending over four centuries of Hohenzollern rule and the German Empire itself. The following day an armistice ended the First World War. Wilhelm's fall symbolised the collapse of the old European monarchical order, a seismic event reflected in the elegiac, disillusioned tone of much postwar poetry written in the years that followed.

  • 9 November 1963

    Mitsui Miike Coal Mine Disaster

On November 9, 1963, a devastating coal dust explosion at the Mitsui Miike mine in Ōmuta, Fukuoka, Japan, resulted in the deaths of 458 miners, making it one of the worst mining disasters in Japan's history. The explosion was caused by a build-up of flammable coal dust and highlighted the dangerous working conditions in the mining industry. This tragedy prompted calls for improved safety measures and regulations to protect miners in Japan and around the world.
