Closes

A note from Richard

V2Melody will close at midnight on 20 January 2028

This site has been a retirement project in musical poetry: poems chosen with care and set to music, offered freely for as long as it felt right to keep the garden open.

The work no longer holds the place it once did in my life. I have gone as far with it as I wish to go. Like a sand mandala, it was made to be completed and then released. I am not attached to its permanence, and I do not believe any of it needs to last beyond the time it was given. The poems were already here before I arrived and began to experiment with them. They will still be here when these musical experiments, and indeed myself, have been swept away, like the sand of a mandala. Nothing has been lost.

I want a simpler end to my life, days of simple love and enjoyment with my wonderful wife of 20 years. The work of maintaining a server, the monitoring, and the residual obligations that come with keeping a site alive no longer fit that life.

From 4 November 2026 I will not be adding new poems or musical poems to the site.

Until midnight on 20 January 2028, Spanish time, everything remains available exactly as it is. That is when my VPS server contract comes to an end, and it will not be renewed. After that, the server will be switched off and the site will disappear.

The Mandala Is Finished explains this more fully.

Thank you to anyone who found a poem, a track, or a quiet moment here.

The pleasure was in the making.

Richard

Destruction of Armored Roman Legions by Gothic Cavalry at Adrianople

At the Battle of Adrianople in Thrace (modern Edirne, Turkey), the migratory Visigoths destroyed a Roman army led by Emperor Valens. The Roman heavy infantry, exhausted by marching in oppressive summer heat while wearing heavy iron mail and helmets, were outmaneuvered and crushed by the flexible, rapid charges of Gothic cavalry. This catastrophic failure demonstrated that heavy infantry armor without tactical mobility was a liability against shock cavalry.

  • 9 August 1969

    Murder of Sharon Tate

The murder of actress Sharon Tate in 1969 by the Manson Family shocked the nation and highlighted the dark side of the counterculture movement. Tate, who was pregnant at the time, was brutally killed alongside several others in Los Angeles. This tragic event not only drew media attention but also marked a turning point in public perception of the 1960s counterculture, leading to increased scrutiny and fear.

  • 9 August 48 BC

    Battle of Pharsalus

In 48 BCE, Julius Caesar decisively defeated Pompey the Great at the Battle of Pharsalus in Greece during the Roman civil war, securing his dominance. Outnumbered but tactically superior, Caesar's victory through bold maneuvers ended major resistance. It paved the way for his dictatorship, the fall of the Republic, and the rise of the Roman Empire.

  • 9 August 1643

    London Women's Peace Protest

Large groups of women petitioned Parliament at Westminster for peace during August 1643 as war disrupted households, food supplies and employment. A demonstration on 9 August became violent when soldiers dispersed the crowd with gunfire. Several women were killed and many were arrested or imprisoned.

  • 9 August 1849

    Bermondsey Horror

The Bermondsey Horror in 1849 involved the gruesome murder of Patrick O'Connor by Maria and Frederick Manning, who then concealed his body beneath their floorboards in London. This shocking crime captured public attention and sparked widespread media coverage, reflecting the Victorian fascination with crime and morality. The case highlighted issues of domestic violence and the darker aspects of human nature, leading to significant discussions about justice and societal norms.

  • 9 August 1982

Diet Coke introduced as first diet cola extension brand

On August 9, 1982, the Coca-Cola Company introduced Diet Coke in the United States, creating the first major brand extension in the soft drink industry and the first diet drink to carry a flagship brand name rather than a separate identity. The product was developed in response to the growing diet-consciousness of American consumers and the success of Tab, Coca-Cola's existing diet drink that had been marketed under a different name to avoid associating the main brand with artificial sweeteners. Diet Coke's introduction represented a pivotal moment in the junk food industry's strategy of creating "healthier" versions of products without fundamentally altering their appeal, a approach that would define the industry's response to public health concerns for decades.
