Throughout his career, Poe worked as an editor and critic for several literary journals, gaining a reputation as a feared critic for his biting reviews. Poe's personal life was as tumultuous as his professional one. In 1836, he married his 13-year-old cousin, Virginia Clemm. Their marriage was reportedly a happy one, but it was cut short by Virginia's death from tuberculosis in 1847. Her illness and death had a profound impact on Poe, exacerbating his struggles with alcoholism and depression.
Poe is credited with inventing the detective fiction genre and contributing to the emerging genre of science fiction. His works often explored themes of death, loss, and psychological torment, reflecting his own troubled life experiences. His writing style, characterized by its focus on the macabre and the psychological, greatly influenced literature and popular culture.
On October 7, 1849, Poe died in Baltimore under mysterious circumstances. He was found delirious on the streets and taken to Washington Medical College, where he died four days later. The exact cause of his death remains a mystery, with theories ranging from alcoholism to rabies.
