Blithely describes an action performed with brightness, ease, or untroubled confidence. In poetry, it can color birdsong, dancing, wandering, or speech with a buoyant mood. Yet the word may become ironic when a character acts blithely while danger, sorrow, or consequence gathers nearby. A poet can therefore use it sincerely for springtime joy or sharply for innocence that fails to perceive the darkness beyond its immediate pleasure.
