Close reading teaches students to support interpretation with precise evidence from a poem. Rather than summarizing subject matter alone, a reader attends to diction, imagery, sound, syntax, line breaks, punctuation, repetition, and form. A close reading may consider why a poet chooses one word instead of another or how an enjambed line changes emphasis. This approach is central to poetry education because poems often compress several possible meanings into a small space, rewarding patient attention to their verbal and structural patterns.
