Quick Definition

Dialogismus is the presentation of an imagined dialogue, often between a speaker and another person, an absent figure, or the self. It makes inner thought or conflict sound like direct speech.

Detailed Definition
Dialogismus stages a conversation that may be real, remembered, invented, or entirely internal. A poet can give voice to an opponent, a lover, a dead person, a future self, or competing impulses within one mind. Because the exchange is dramatized rather than merely summarized, it creates immediacy and lets readers hear uncertainty, resistance, persuasion, or desire unfolding. In lyric poetry, dialogismus often turns solitary reflection into a small scene, making private emotion more vivid while preserving the tensions between different possible responses.
Example
Example in poetry:
“What would my mother say? ‘Child, come in from the rain’”; “The sailor argues with himself: ‘Turn back,’ says fear, ‘sail on,’ says hope”; “I asked the moon, ‘Have you seen him?’ and imagined it replying, ‘Only his shadow’”; “The speaker gives the river a voice: ‘I have carried sorrows before’”
Additional Notes
Dialogismus brings an absent or imagined voice onto the page, allowing a poem to stage debate, memory, accusation, or self-questioning. Quotation marks are optional; shifts in diction and address can establish the voices. It is closely related to dramatic monologue and prosopopoeia.
