What happened
HMS Victory served as Horatio Nelson's flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar off Cape Trafalgar, Spain, on 21 October 1805. The British fleet defeated the combined French and Spanish fleets, but Nelson was mortally wounded aboard Victory. The battle secured British naval dominance during the Napoleonic Wars.
Literary impact
Wordsworth, Byron, Felicia Hemans and Thomas Hardy all responded to Nelson, Trafalgar or Victory in poetry. Their works helped turn the ship into a national shrine while also confronting the human cost concealed within the language of glory.
