The German battleship Bismarck and cruiser Prinz Eugen engaged HMS Hood and HMS Prince of Wales in the Denmark Strait in May 1941. A catastrophic magazine explosion destroyed Hood within minutes. Only three men survived from a crew of more than 1,400.

The destruction of Britain's most famous warship generated elegies and naval poems that contrasted Hood's public splendour with its almost instantaneous disappearance. Its loss became a poetic measure of wartime shock and the fragility of national symbols.
