Scottish opponents of Charles I's religious innovations subscribed the National Covenant at Greyfriars Kirk in Edinburgh in February 1638. It defended the reformed Church of Scotland and rejected unapproved changes in worship. The movement united broad sections of Scottish society against royal policy.

The Covenant encouraged a culture of collective oath-taking, public preaching, psalm singing and printed declarations. Its biblical language influenced political writing throughout Britain and later shaped Parliament's alliance with Scotland.
