Parliamentarian troops commanded by Sir Thomas Fairfax stormed Royalist-held Leeds in Yorkshire on 23 January 1643. Fierce street fighting ended with the town's capture and many prisoners taken. The victory strengthened Parliament's position in the West Riding.

The fighting showed how marketplaces, streets and houses could become battlefields. Northern news pamphlets and memoirs preserved the experience of urban civilians alongside accounts of commanders and armies.
