Parliamentarian cavalry defeated a Royalist relief force at Winceby in Lincolnshire on 11 October 1643. Oliver Cromwell participated prominently and survived having his horse shot beneath him. The victory helped Parliament secure much of Lincolnshire and weakened the Royalist position around Bolingbroke Castle.

Winceby reinforced Cromwell's reputation for personal courage and disciplined cavalry. Parliamentarian reports interpreted his survival and victory through the providential language that later surrounded his political career.
