The New Model Army defeated Lord Goring's western Royalist army near Langport in Somerset on 10 July 1645. Parliamentarian cavalry broke the Royalist position, forcing a retreat towards Bridgwater. The victory ended the Royalists' ability to maintain a major field army in south-western England.

Langport reinforced the New Model's cultivated reputation for discipline and divine favour. Army chaplains and newsbooks converted battlefield success into lessons about moral reform, unity and godly leadership.
