The Long Parliament abolished archbishops and bishops in England and Wales through ordinances completed in 1646. Episcopal lands were transferred to trustees and sold to support parliamentary finances. The measure dismantled a central institution of the pre-war religious and social order.

The fall of episcopacy transformed clerical patronage, worship and religious publishing. Anglican poets and devotional writers mourned a broken sacred order, while reformers celebrated deliverance from prelatical authority.
