What happened
Oliver Cromwell's English army decisively defeated David Leslie's larger Scottish Covenanter force near Dunbar in East Lothian on 3 September 1650. Thousands of Scots were killed or captured, opening the route to Edinburgh. The battle secured England's position after Scotland recognised Charles II as king.
Literary impact
Cromwell's dispatches interpreted Dunbar through intense providential language that influenced republican panegyric. The victory forms part of the political background to Andrew Marvell's subtle poetry about Cromwellian power and historical change.
