What happened
John Milton's Paradise Lost was first published in London in 1667, seven years after the Restoration. The blind former Commonwealth official retold the biblical rebellion in heaven, the temptation of Adam and Eve and humanity's expulsion from Eden. A revised twelve-book edition followed in 1674.
Literary impact
The epic transformed Milton's experience of revolution, defeat and restored monarchy into a cosmic meditation on obedience, liberty and fallen ambition. Its Satan, regicide-era vocabulary and concern with inward freedom remain inseparable from the Civil War generation.
