Zedler Begins the Grosses Universal-Lexicon
What happened
The bookseller Johann Heinrich Zedler began publishing the 'Grosses vollständiges Universal-Lexicon' in Leipzig, Germany. Reaching 68 total volumes upon its completion in 1754, this massive effort was the largest print encyclopedia project in Europe up to that time. Zedler made history by employing a large, structured editorial committee to compile and standardize biography, science, law, and geography, establishing a collaborative corporate model for reference publishing.
Literary impact
Zedler's monumental German compilation standardized scientific, legal, and artistic terminology across fragmented German states. It provided German Enlightenment poets like Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock with a unified linguistic lexicon, helping to elevate German to a serious literary language for philosophical verse.
