What happened
A massive explosion occurred at the Port Chicago Naval Magazine in California, United States, when hundreds of tons of industrial and military ammunition detonated while being loaded onto a cargo ship. The blast killed 320 sailors and civilians, the vast majority of whom were segregated African American enlisted personnel. The subsequent refusal of surviving sailors to return to work under identical unsafe conditions led to the historic Port Chicago Mutiny trial.
