Viking Development of the Nasal Helmet and Round Shield
What happened
By 900 AD across Scandinavia and the British Isles, Viking raiders and Norse armies standardized a highly functional defensive kit centered on the conical nasal helmet and the large wooden round shield. The helmet, often constructed using a sturdy four-piece spangenhelm frame or single-sheet forge work, featured a thick vertical iron bar protecting the nose from horizontal sword blows. The shield, built from lightweight linden wood edged with rawhide and reinforced with a heavy iron boss, was used dynamically to catch and deflect weapons.
Literary impact
This highly practical armor configuration dominates the Old Norse skaldic poetry composed at the courts of Scandinavian chieftains. Skalds filled their verses with kenning metaphors derived directly from this gear, calling the round shield 'the wall of valkyries' and the nasal helmet 'the roof of the skull.'
