As United Nations forces advanced towards the Yalu River in North Korea, Chinese officials conveyed warnings through diplomatic intermediaries that China would intervene. American leaders discounted the messages or treated them as bluff. Chinese forces then entered the war in strength, reversing the UN advance and prolonging the conflict.

The resulting war divided Korean language and literary communities as brutally as territory. Poets such as Kim Su-yeong and later Ko Un wrote from a society shaped by ideological censorship, displacement and official narratives that obscured civilian experience.
