What happened

Thomas was awarded a Traveling Scholarship by the Society of Authors, which allowed him to take his family to Italy. While living in Florence, he worked on a collection of poetry that would eventually become 'In Country Sleep, and Other Poems'. This period in Europe provided him with a change of scenery that stimulated new perspectives in his writing.

Literary impact

Exposure to new environments and the distance from his daily life in Wales helped him conceptualize his later work. His time abroad encouraged him to refine his technique and focus on themes of exile and the comfort of the familiar.
