Poet involved

What happened

In 1937, Valéry was appointed to the newly established chair of Poetics at the Collège de France in Paris. He held the professorship until his death in 1945. The appointment gave official academic status to the study of poetry and to the theoretical questions that had occupied him throughout his life.

Literary impact

The chair allowed Valéry to develop publicly the ideas about poetic creation, language and consciousness that had previously been explored in his notebooks and essays. It also confirmed his status as both a practising poet and a major theorist of poetry.
