What happened
Having settled in France in the late 1930s, Nichols was on the last ship to carry British refugees from the Côte d’Azur in June 1940 after the German occupation of France. He then moved to Cambridge, England. The escape closed his interwar continental years.
Literary impact
Flight from France returned him to wartime Britain as an older, poorer poet editing and selecting rather than charging with a battery. The second war frames his last books and the 1943 anthology of 1914–1918 verse.
