What happened
In 1940 Harper and Brothers issued The Lost Zoo in New York, a book of narrative rhymes for children written as if by Cullen’s cat Christopher. The poems invent the animals that missed Noah’s ark. Composed while Cullen was teaching in Harlem, the volume opened a late, lighter vein after the thinning of his adult lyric output.
Literary impact
The Lost Zoo shows Cullen carrying formal rhyme into writing for the young, a turn that suited the schoolteacher years. The book kept his name in print when new adult collections had all but ceased.
