On 27 September 1940 Countee Cullen married Ida Mae Roberson, a friend of several years, and the couple made a home in suburban Tuckahoe, New York, in Westchester County. The quiet second marriage contrasted with the Harlem spectacle of his 1928 wedding to Yolande Du Bois. He continued to commute to Frederick Douglass Junior High School in Harlem while living outside the city.
Literary impact
The Tuckahoe years framed Cullen’s last writing, including children’s books and the book for St. Louis Woman. Companionship with Ida Mae gave him a settled domestic life after a decade of travel, divorce, and the fading of his early fame.
