In 1791 the Cornish mineralogist William Gregor discovered a new metallic element in ilmenite sand near Helford River, initially calling it manaccanite. The German chemist Martin Heinrich Klaproth independently rediscovered it in 1795 and named it titanium. Lightweight, strong, and highly resistant to corrosion, titanium has become essential in aerospace and medical engineering.
