The Dust Bowl and its insured and uninsured losses are the subject of some of the most powerful American poetry and prose of the twentieth century — Steinbeck's 'The Grapes of Wrath', Woody Guthrie's 'Dust Bowl Ballads', and the documentary photography of Dorothea Lange all mediate the landscape of agricultural ruin.
