Around 1800 Charles Stanhope, third Earl Stanhope, developed the first printing press constructed entirely of iron, replacing the traditional wooden frame. The Stanhope Press was stronger, more precise, and capable of printing a larger sheet in a single impression. Its greater efficiency helped reduce the cost of books and newspapers, widening access to printed literature including poetry.
Literary impact
