In 1936, artificial carbonation was introduced in England with Watney's experimental pasteurised Red Barrel. The method did not dominate immediately, but it pointed towards filtered, pressurised keg beer. Later, keg would become a symbol of mass-market convenience and flavour standardisation.

Red Barrel became a target for real-ale campaigners and pub nostalgists, much as standardized modernity became a target for poets. Its history helps explain later poems and essays mourning the loss of local taste, cask craft, and conversation-rich pubs, reflecting a longing for authenticity in a rapidly changing world.
