What happened
Organized by David Gascoyne, Roland Penrose, and Herbert Read, the London International Surrealist Exhibition opened at the New Burlington Galleries. The event officially introduced the British public to the radical subconscious arts, featuring works from across the globe. At one point, Salvador Dalí nearly suffocated to death while delivering a lecture in a deep-sea diving suit, carrying a billiard cue and leading two greyhounds, a performance intended to symbolize his deep descent into the human subconscious.
Literary impact
This exhibition sparked an immediate explosion of surrealist experimentation within English poetry. It led directly to the formation of the British Surrealist Group, influencing poets like Dylan Thomas to incorporate dense, non-linear dream imagery and auditory hallucinations into traditional Celtic lyrical forms.
