What happened
The Tang Dynasty was founded in 618 CE by Li Yuan (Emperor Gaozu) following the collapse of the Sui Dynasty, inaugurating China's golden age of cosmopolitan culture and territorial expansion. The dynasty lasted until 907 CE and witnessed unprecedented cultural flourishing, international trade along the Silk Road, and religious diversity including Buddhism, Daoism, Nestorian Christianity, and Islam. Chang'an became the world's largest and most cosmopolitan city.
Literary impact
The Tang Dynasty produced China's greatest poets including Li Bai, Du Fu, Wang Wei, and Bai Juyi, whose works remain central to Chinese literary canon. The imperial examination system's emphasis on poetry elevated literary skill as a path to government service. Tang poetry's technical perfection in regulated verse (lüshi) and quatrain (jueju) forms, combined with its emotional depth and philosophical sophistication, set standards that influenced East Asian poetry for over a millennium.
