T'ang Dynasty Creates Bureau of Songs (Yuefu)

Poets involved

What happened

The T'ang imperial court formalizes the Music Bureau (Yuefu) to collect folk songs and ballads from across China, treating rural oral poetry as valuable state patrimony. Officials transcribe work songs, love ballads, ritual chants, and satirical folk verses, preserving material otherwise lost to time. This state-sponsored project treats commoners' oral traditions as literary raw material for elite poets.

Literary impact

Yuefu collections inspired the great T'ang poets Li Bai and Du Fu to imitate folk ballad forms, using simple diction and narrative frames derived from peasant songs. The yuefu genre became a respected poetic mode, proving that folk vernacular could fuel high literary innovation. This bidirectional flow—folk to court to folk—reshaped Chinese poetic practice for a millennium.
