Lyrical Ballads re-centres poetry on ordinary nature
Poets involved
What happened
In 1798, William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge published Lyrical Ballads. The book appeared during a period of industrial expansion, rural change, and political uncertainty. It redirected English poetry towards common speech, memory, childhood, walking, rivers, ruined cottages, and natural perception.
Literary impact
Lyrical Ballads made environmental attention a foundation of Romantic poetry. Wordsworth's landscapes and Coleridge's supernatural seas helped later poets treat nature not merely as scenery but as a moral, psychological, and ecological force.
