In 1547 the Japanese Buddhist poet and diplomat Sakugen Shūryō led an Ashikaga shogunate mission to the court of the Jiajing Emperor in Beijing. Such embassies combined diplomacy, Zen learning and literary exchange. They kept channels open between Japanese and Chinese elite cultures despite regional instability.

Sakugen's journey highlights travel writing and diplomatic poetry beyond Europe. His mission belongs to a Sino-Japanese world where poems, inscriptions and conversations served as tools of negotiation and cultural memory.
