Ivan IV was crowned Tsar of all Russia in 1547, giving Muscovite rule a new imperial title and sacred aura. The ceremony strengthened autocracy and the link between monarchy and Orthodox legitimacy. It also framed Moscow as a centre of religious and historical destiny.

Ivan's reign shaped chronicles, saints' lives, polemics and later epic memory in Russian culture. The centralisation of power affected the conditions under which scribes, church writers and oral storytellers represented authority and suffering.
