The First Book Is Printed in Ireland

What happened

In 1551 an edition of the Book of Common Prayer printed by Humphrey Powell in Dublin became the first book printed in Ireland. It served the English Reformation's attempt to reshape worship. The event placed a printing press inside a contested colonial, linguistic and religious landscape.

Literary impact

Irish printing began not with Gaelic literature but with state-backed religious reform in English. That tension helps explain later struggles between oral Gaelic poetry, manuscript culture and official print authority.
