The University of San Marcos Is Founded in Lima

What happened

The National University of San Marcos was founded in Lima in 1551 by royal decree. It became one of the earliest universities in the Americas and a centre of colonial education. Its establishment linked scholarship, church power and imperial administration in the Viceroyalty of Peru.

Literary impact

Universities in colonial cities trained clergy, translators and writers who mediated between European texts and Indigenous worlds. San Marcos helped shape the environment in which colonial chronicles, sermons and learned poetry developed.
