John Street Theatre Opens in New York
What happened
On 7 December 1767 the John Street Theatre opened in Manhattan with a performance of The Beaux' Stratagem. It was New York's first permanent theatre. The opening showed that urban colonial audiences were becoming large enough to support regular professional performance.
Literary impact
A permanent theatre helped turn drama into a recurring public habit rather than an occasional novelty. It contributed to the performance culture that shaped early American satire, song, political theatre and spoken verse.
