Birth of Abu Nuwas

Poet involved

What happened

Abu Nuwas al-Hasan ibn Hani al-Hakami was born around 756 in Ahvaz, in southwestern Persia, to an Arab father and Persian mother. He would become one of the greatest classical Arabic poets, renowned for his technical mastery, wit, and willingness to challenge conventional themes by celebrating wine, homoerotic love, and hedonistic pleasures alongside traditional panegyric and religious poetry.

Literary impact

Abu Nuwas revolutionized Arabic poetry by breaking from pre-Islamic desert imagery and Bedouin values, instead embracing urban sophistication and cosmopolitan themes reflective of Abbasid Baghdad. His khamriyyat (wine poems) elevated drinking poetry to high art, while his mujun (licentious) verses challenged social and religious norms with provocative humor. His influence extended across the Arabic-speaking world and into Persian literature, where poets adapted his themes and techniques, demonstrating poetry's capacity for social critique and transgressive expression.
