Portugal restores its independence from Spain
What happened
In 1640, Portuguese nobles overthrew Habsburg rule and acclaimed John IV of Braganza as king. The revolt began the Portuguese Restoration War against Spain. It restored a separate Portuguese monarchy after sixty years of Iberian union.
Literary impact
Restoration politics renewed Portuguese patriotic writing, court poetry and historical memory. Writers used older epic traditions associated with Camões while reimagining Portugal's imperial and national destiny.
