The Second Northern War begins
What happened
In 1655, Sweden invaded the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, beginning the conflict known in Poland as the Deluge. The war drew in several regional powers. It devastated large parts of the Commonwealth and altered the balance of power around the Baltic.
Literary impact
The Deluge became a major theme of Polish historical memory, later dramatised in epic fiction and patriotic writing. For poets and chroniclers, invasion and religious defence shaped images of nation, suffering and resilience.
